Alfred L. Cralle

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania | 1819-1918

Alfred L. Cralle is the man who invented the ice cream scoop. Cralle attended Wayland Seminary. Once Cralle graduated he became an African American businessman and inventor. Cralle saw a problem, when scooping the ice cream would get stuck to the spoon or ladle.
While Cralle was working at a hotel he came up with the idea of the ice cream scoop. The first one he made was more cone shaped then ones we have today. Cralle called his invention the ice cream mold and disher. The ice cream mold was made to help foods from sticking to the mold while scooping. Cralle never made any money off of his invention and everyone forgot he made it.
