Calas Ladies

New Orleans, Louisiana | 1719

In the 1700s, free and enslaved Black women in Louisiana sold calas, or rice fritters. Calas originate in the rice-growing regions of West Africa. For vendors who were able to keep their earnings, the sale of calas was used as a way to purchase freedom.
