Edna Lewis

1919-Present

Edna Lewis was known for her cookbooks that highlighted her southern roots.
Edna Lewis was born in 1916 in Freetown, VA on a farm. She was one of the most influential figures in modern southern cooking. Edna's first cooking job was at Cafe Nicholson once her father died when she was 16. Edna left Cafe Nicholson in 1954 and started teaching cooking classes. She also lectured at the American Museum of Natural History. She wrote 4 cookbooks, Edna Lewis unfortunately passed in 2006, but her memory lives on through her recipes.
