Frances Gillette Hern

Working alongside her sister-in-law, Edith Hern Fossett, Frances Hern was an enslaved cook at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello plantation. Like Edith, she trained with French chef Honoré Julien and was skilled in the French-Virginia style of cooking pioneered by James Hemings.
