George Granger Sr.

Virginia | 1796

George Granger, Sr. was the Monticello farm foreman. Thomas Jefferson nicknamed him “Great George” and noted his “extraordinary” skill with orchards, row crops, and cattle. In 1796, Jefferson made him overseer, the only enslaved man to work in that position and earn an annual wage.
