George Washington Carver was born a slave on a slave farm in Diamond Grove, Missouri. He was freed one year after he was born, when slavery was abolished.
He was the first African American to receive the Bachelor of Science degree for his research on the fungal infections on soybeans. But, his real breakthrough was with peanuts. He invented over 300 different things using peanuts, including peanut milk, shampoo, shaving cream, paper, wood stain and cosmetics. He also made 118 inventions out of sweet potatoes including gasoline, molasses and vinegar. Carver passed away on January 5th, 1945 in Tuskegee, Alabama.
