James Hemings

1719-1818

James Hemings was born in the early 1760s and was enslaved to Thomas Jefferson. When Jefferson went to France in 1784, Hemings came too and became the first American trained as a French chef. When he returned to America he brought many dishes like macaroni and cheese and ice cream.
