James Hemings

Virginia | 1719-1818

James Hemings was born in 1765 in Virginia. At eight, he was enslaved by Thomas Jefferson. Later, he would accompany Jefferson on a trip to France, where Hemings trained to be a French chef. He brought back to the US several European foods we still enjoy today.
