James Hemings

Virginia | 1719-1818

James Hemings was enslaved to Thomas Jefferson. He and Jefferson went to France together. Jefferson then got a personal residence and Hemings was a chef there. After a while of working there people started saying he had better food than Versailles (a royal palace in France). James Hemings got to cook food for the historical meeting between Thomas Jefferson and Hamilton! He then died in 1801 to suicide.
