James Hemings

1719-1818

James Hemings was enslaved to Thomas Jefferson, and he spent much of his life in France learning French cuisine. When he returned, he brought back many great dishes, including Mac and Cheese, Ice Cream, and French Fries. He also cooked many important meals, such as one between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. He was released from slavery at the age of 30.
