Mary Ellen Pleasant

San Francisco, California | 1850s

Pleasant moved to California during the Gold Rush and opened exclusive restaurants and boarding houses. Though her establishments served San Francisco’s white elite, she was a staunch civil rights activist, earning the title “Mother of Civil Rights in California.”
