Robert Bogle

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania | 1790s

Born enslaved in 1774, Bogle worked as a waiter to buy his freedom. He is credited with inventing the concept of modern catering as a service that provides food, drink, and staff at private events. His great success as a caterer inspired others in Philadelphia to follow suit.
