Stanley Hughes and Linda Leach

North Carolina | 1919-Present

Pine Knot Farms, a certified organic farm, began in 1912 when it was purchased by Hughes' grandfather. While growing up, Hughes helped raise hogs, cows, and chickens, and grow large vegetable gardens while his father grew tobacco. In 1975, Hughes started farming on his own, and for years worked a 40 hour week while growing tobacco on the side.
With a desire to farm without pesticides, in 1996, Hughes began farming full time, growing organic tobacco, collards, kale, broccoli, beans, cabbage and mustard greens.
