Washington, D.C. | early 1800s

Born enslaved in Washington, D.C., Turner bought her freedom for $1,400. She used her gardening expertise and entrepreneurial skills to set up a stand where she sold produce and baked goods. She earned enough money to purchase the freedom of 22 others over a period of 25 years.
