Barney Lancelot Ford

Denver, Colorado | 1863

Ford, born enslaved in Virginia in 1822, was a restaurateur, hotelier, and Civil Rights pioneer in the American West. After escaping slavery, Ford ultimately made his way to Denver, Colorado, where he opened People’s Restaurant and the Inter Ocean Hotel, which fed Denver’s elite.
