Cyrus Bustill

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania | 1770s

Bustill sold baked goods to buy his freedom in New Jersey. He became a prominent baker and brewer in Philadelphia, and served as a baker for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. After the war, Bustill helped found the Free African Society and a school for blacks.
