Petal, Mississippi | 1973

Burkett is a fourth-generation farmer and activist. His 320-acre farm in Petal, Mississippi, was expanded from the 164 acres his great-grandfather acquired in 1889. A leader in the 1988 Black Farmers Lawsuit against the USDA, he has long advocated for independent farmers.
