Black Seminoles

Florida | 1700s to 1850s

A mix of free and self-manumitted Africans (Maroons) that merged with Seminole Indians in Florida, the Black Seminoles had a major presence in Florida. Their diet included corn, beans, squash, and grain. Sofkee, a drink made of sour corn, is still enjoyed by Seminoles today.
