Charity Duchess Quamino

The “pastry queen of Rhode Island” was brought to Newport from Ghana at the age of 15. While enslaved, she launched a catering business and purchased her freedom and that of her children. She was known as the best pastry chef in the area, thanks in part to her frosted plum cakes.
