Distillers of Mount Vernon

Virginia | 1799

In 1799, George Washington’s Mount Vernon plantation was the largest American producer of whiskey. That year, enslaved distillers Hanson, Peter, Nat, Daniel, James, and Timothy produced more than 11,000 gallons of whiskey from a combination of rye, wheat, corn, and malted barley.
