Samuel Anderson

Brought from Guinea as a child, Anderson was an enslaved carpenter at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. He became skilled in hunting and beekeeping, and was granted special privileges to own a gun. Anderson earned wages selling wild game, honey, and beeswax to Alexandria residents.
