George E. Johnston

Johnston was a chef at several Charleston, South Carolina, hotels in the 1850s: the Charleston Hotel, the Moultrie House, and the Mills House. He prepared menus, staged grand dinners, purchased wine, and trained staff. In 1865, he opened George’s Restaurant, a food retail store.
