Joshua Bowen Smith

Boston, Massachusetts | 1836

A Boston caterer celebrated for his restaurant at 16 Brattle Street, Smith was born free in 1813 in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Smith was an abolitionist, a state senator, and a vocal supporter of the Underground Railroad. He hired escaping individuals and employed them in his business.
