In 1889, Johnson went to the White House to replace President Benjamin Harrison’s French cook. She went on to feed three more presidents—Grover Cleveland, William McKinley, and Theodore Roosevelt—then returned to her native Kentucky and opened restaurants in downtown Lexington.
