Okra

1700s

Okra has moved across continents since the 1100s. Native to present-day Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, and Egypt, okra was brought to the Americas during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. It remains a popular Southern ingredient, commonly thickening soups such as gumbo.
