Rose Nicaud

New Orleans, Louisiana | early 1800s

Nicaud was legendary for the black coffee and café au lait she sold from a pushcart in the New Orleans French Market. She used her earnings to buy her own freedom and secure a permanent spot in front of the St. Louis Cathedral. A New Orleans coffee shop that bore her name closed in 2019.
