Solomon Northup

New York | 1800s

Northup, born free in 1808 in Minerva, New York, documented life on a Louisiana cotton plantation after being kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841. In his 1853 memoir 12 Years A Slave, he described the production of foods given to the enslaved: corn, sweet potatoes, and hogs.
