William Douglas (Dug)

Buffalo, New York | 1840s

Douglas left Tennessee and opened Dug’s Dive in Buffalo, New York, sometime in the 1830s. His Commercial Street tavern served Black sailors, boatmen, and dock workers, and was possibly a stop on the Underground Railroad. Dug’s is the first instance of a bar being called a dive.
