Wright, a waiter in a whites-only restaurant in Greenwood, Mississippi, spoke candidly in a 1966 NBC News interview about the cruel treatment he endured there to provide for his family. When the show aired, white viewers criticized him and his café, Booker’s Place, was burned down.
