Red Pea

South Carolina | 1600s

The Sea Island or Geechee red pea, from West Africa, first came as a provision for the enslaved. It’s still a go-to legume in the US thanks to the Gullah Geechee community on Sapelo Island, Georgia, and can be found in iconic dishes like Hoppin’ John.
